Over the past twenty years or so, superheroes have dominated the landscape of television and film.
It appears that every other day there's anew sci-fi series or movie featuring a person in a spandex suit defeating bad guys and aiming to protect the world from a would-be dictator.
To be honest, even as a supporter of the caped and masked heroes, it can become quite tiring.
However, not all superhero series revolve around the apocalypse; some are much more grounded in reality.
And one such program, titledExtraordinary, just been added toITVX.
Developed by Emma Moran, Extraordinary takes place in a society where all individuals gain a superpower upon reaching 18, with the main character, Jen (Máiréad Tyers), being a young adult who appears to lack any such abilities.
The show then tracks Jen along with her roommates Carrie (Sofia Oxenham) and Kash (Bilal Hasna) as they navigate their ordinary everyday lives.
Oh, and there's a cat that can change its form (Luke Rollason) who develops a romantic interest in Jen.
Sure, it's an odd program.
Exceptional initially aired for two seasons (approximately 16 episodes) onDisney Plusfrom 2023 until 2024 and garnered excellent feedback.
Both seasons received 100% ratingsRotten Tomatoes, and critics claimed it exceeded its reputation.
Faithful to its title, Extraordinary merges and modifies well-known conventions into something truly original," wrote Judy Berman in Time Magazine. "That it also createsDeadpoolappear as bold as The Incredibles is an added benefit.
Meanwhile, Keith Watson provided a four-star review for Infowrote 'It distinguishes itself from the rest in comparison to other superpower series'.
It's no surprise that the series achieved great success, earning the Best Scripted Comedy award at the Royal Television Society Programme Awards in March 2024.
Regrettably, none of this success was enough to prevent its cancellation. In 2024,Disneystated they would not proceed with a third season.
A representative stated, 'Disney Plus Original series 'Extraordinary' will not be returning for a third season on the platform.
We are extremely proud of the funny, award-winning show that has been made possible by the highly skilled British and Irish cast and crew, our production collaborators at Sid Gentle Films, and the outstanding writing abilities of creator Emma Moran.
Following the announcement, supporters headed toRedditto convey their dissatisfaction with the choice.
Such terrible news," wrote Responsible-Speed341. "One of the most imaginative and enjoyable shows from recent years. I enjoyed every moment. It's disappointing that there won't be a third season.
Nevertheless, if you didn't get to experience Jen's journeys when they initially came out, this is the ideal moment to get caught up.
Exceptional episodes one and two can be watched on ITVX right now.
