Cameron Munster has shown his backing for his previous Queensland and club teammateCameron Smith ultimately becoming part of the Melbourne Stormcoaching staff. Smith made the unexpected decision to join theBrisbane Broncos coaching staff in 2026 under Michael Maguire.
The Storm's legend will provide guidance and support in 2026, marking a significant recruitment success for the current champions. Smith's choice to move to the Broncos caught fans off guard, as Melbourne may have lost the chance to secure the 430-game club icon for their squad.
There have also been suggestions that Smith might be waiting in Brisbane before moving to Melbourne, with the aim of pursuing the head coaching position. This could happen when Craig Bellamy decides to retire from his successful coaching career, with rumors indicating his time in Melbourne may be ending.
And former teammate Munster has called on the club to prevent Smith from staying too long with their competitors. Munster indicated that Smith might return to Melbourne once he gains more insight into the coaching aspect in the north.
"It's disappointing to witness him in various colours, but it's clear he aims for some growth," Munster stated. "He believes there's an alternative approach to coaching, and who knows, he could experience some progress there and eventually return (to coach the Storm)." Munster won the 2020 NRL title with captain Smith after they beat the Panthers in the final.
The present Queensland captain recognizes Smith's background and would be excited to have his former teammate return to the team. Despite this, the player has acknowledged he is uncertain about how much more time he has left in the NRL.
Cameron Munster details his plan for retiring
On Tuesday, Munster spoke about his future, acknowledging he doesn't wish to remain in the NRL longer than necessary and instead look forward to life after football. Observing Ryan Papenhuyzen's decision to leave his Melbourne Storm contract to focus on his health, Munster is conscious of not wanting to regret playing an extra season.
I'm 32 this year," he mentioned during an appearance on Channel Nine's Today Show. "I hope to have two or three more years (remaining in my body). I don't want to keep playing until I'm 36 and have to be wheeled out. It's better to step away when you can and retire according to your own choices.
Many athletes have missed out on opportunities due to injuries. I aim to retire on my own terms – two or three years seems reasonable." Munster will take the field and guide the Storm into the 2026 season following the heartbreak of last year's grand final defeat to the Broncos. Melbourne faces a greater challenge in 2026 after losing several key players for the season.
