Terrell Williams received a diagnosis ofprostate cancerFollowing the team's opening match of the season against the Las Vegas Raiders, Williams has now disclosed that he is free from cancer as the season draws to a close.
Speaking with the media on Monday before the major match, Williams mentioned that he became aware of an issue when he vomited multiple times the night prior to the Raiders game. He informed the team's head coach, Mike Vrabel, on the day of the game and was examined by the team's medical team before heading to an urgent care facility.
"While they were conducting tests, that's when they discovered the cancer, so I'm grateful I had the stomach flu because otherwise, things would have continued as normal," Williams said.
Initially, his physicians believed he had lymphoma due to the way the cancer had spread. However, after seeking treatment at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, it was revealed that Williams had a severe type of prostate cancer.
Throughout the season, Williams stayed in Boston and could not accompany the team to away matches. TheSuper Bowl signals the first instance this season where Williams will join the Patriots as they compete against the Seattle Seahawks, a repeat of the 2015 Super Bowl, where the Patriots secured the prestigious Vince Lombardi trophy.
This might be a pre-season match, and I'd be content being here with these players following everything I've experienced, everything we've gone through," Williams remarked. "It has been a pleasure for me to see them grow and to watch them embrace the message that [Vrabel] is delivering.
"Hopefully we can make [fans] smile on Sunday," he added.
Team members praised Williams for his commitment to being present for them, even while managing his health.
“I think he never really lost it,” linebacker K’Lavon Chaisson mentioned. “He still had that charming energy and always stayed smiling; he remained optimistic. You wouldn’t have known anything was happening with him. I valued everything he demonstrated throughout the journey.”
Hosted at Levi's Stadium in California, theSuper Bowlwill occur on February 8 at 6:30pm ET.
