U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro is facing criticism for her anti-gun comments, joining a growing list of Trump administration officials experiencing a backlash regarding firearms. Her warning that individuals bringing guns into Washington, D.C. could be jailed has sparked a reaction from across the political spectrum, led by conservative gun organizations and Republican lawmakers.
You bring a firearm into the District, take my word for it, you'll end up in jail," Pirro stated during a Fox News appearance on Monday afternoon. "It doesn't matter if you possess a permit from another area, or if you're a responsible gun owner elsewhere. If you carry a gun into this District, be prepared to go to jail, and pray you can retrieve your weapon, which makes all the difference.
The New York Timesnoted that Pirro's comments "might widen an increasing divide between gun owners and the Trump administration."
U.S. Representative Greg Steube (R-FL) criticized Pirro, warning her, “Come and Get It.”
I bring a firearm into the area each week," he wrote to Pirro. "I hold a permit in Florida and Washington, D.C., to carry it. And I intend to keep carrying it to safeguard myself and others.
U.S. Congressman Chip Roy (R-TX)declared, "This is not how this works," and asked Attorney General Pam Bondi to "have a quick conversation" with Pirro for a "change in direction here."
U.S. Congressman Thomas Massie (R-KY)added, "Washington, D.C. has been a 'shall issue' jurisdiction since 2017, following the removal of the requirement that one must have a 'good reason' to carry a handgun. Non-residents are able to get a permit in DC — don't question how I'm aware of this."
U.S. Representative Andrew Clyde (R-GA), referencing the Second Amendment, wroteShall NOT be infringed is NOT a recommendation.
"Our Second Amendment rights aren't lost when we move between states or enter the nation's capital," he said, later advocating for a national concealed carry recognition law.
Gun Owners of America, also, called forthe implementation of the Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act following Pirro's comments, along with actions taken by other firearms advocacy organizations.
"Unacceptable and intolerable" was the description used by the National Association for Gun Rights to characterize Pirro's comments, prior toshifting its attention to the legal field.
Jeanine Pirro's threat to arrest individuals carrying in DC, even if they are lawful and licensed, highlights how flawed and disconnected these gun laws are," the group stated. "This is why we require Real Constitutional Carry across the country. Officials act as though the 2A is not present and boast about imprisoning people for exercising their rights.
The NRA did not reference Pirro directly, but alsocalled forthe passage of the National Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, following which he stated, "Your right to defend yourself shouldn't stop just because you moved across a state border or entered Washington, D.C."
MS NOW's Joe Scarborough, a former Republican U.S. Representative, now independent, called Pirro’s remarks “Unconstitutional drivel.”
A former Republican congressman Joe Walsh, now a Democrat, calledPirro's comments are described as "the latest indication in the Trump administration's campaign against firearm rights."
"What Pirro just stated is an unconstitutional threat to every American's right under the 2nd Amendment, on national television," The Lincoln ProjectcommentedTrump and his administration are once more attempting to take away your constitutional right.
Indeed, as Politicoreported, President Donald Trump recently stated, "You can't have guns. You can't enter with guns," concerning the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis by federal agents. Pretti was a licensed individual with a concealed carry permit.
Trump took it a step further, stating, "he definitely shouldn't have been carrying a gun," and "I don't like the fact that he had a gun, I don't like that he had two fully loaded magazines, that's a lot of negative things."
FBI Director Kash Patel recently stated, "it's not possible to carry a loaded gun along with several magazines to any demonstration you choose."
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem also mentioned that she was unaware of any peaceful protester who arrives with a firearm and ammunition instead of a placard.
